Our CEO, Shadim Hussain, spoke to RT on the impact of covid-19 on children in particularly the situation with foster carers and their children and the impact of closing schools on the wider community.
The discussion as to whether or not schools should be shut in the UK due to the Coronavirus is still on an ongoing issue and there are arguments on both sides at the time of writing this blog post. To date, there are 1391 cases in the UK, 330 new cases and 35 deaths across UK.
According to The Guardian, As of 15 March, more than 156,000 people have been infected in more than 80 countries, according to the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering.
There have been over 5,800 deaths globally. Just over 3,000 of those deaths have occurred in mainland China. More than 73,000 people have recovered from the coronavirus.
Our CEO, Shadim Hussain stated, “ We are in an unprecedented situation here as it is a state of emergency. Essentially what we recognise is that children are the carriers. Children up to the age of 10 may be less likely to contract it but when they come back into the house they may be likely to give it to older more vulnerable adults. Covid-19 will have a direct impact on health care and social care. The government is advising people to isolate for seven days but what do we do when we are in a situation when we are caring for somebody and there isn’t a direct replacement?”
“We also have to consider foster care. What happens to a child under a foster carer? It is not easy to replace those relationships and many foster children have already experienced trauma in life and they are vulnerable of going through the trauma again. “ stated Mr Hussain.
“The NHS works directly hand in hand with social care with nurses visiting care homes and we are already in the situation due to the austerity measures. This Friday we had a Foster Friday campaign but we have had to postpone this simply because we don’t have the resources in place and there is a risk that our staff from local authorities may be off work”.
